Fun Things to Do in Sheffield this Autumn

  • November 6, 2019

The air is crisp, the leaves are colourful, and sweater weather is upon us. Just because classes are in full swing doesn’t mean you can’t still experience the wonder of autumn! We’ve gathered ten fun things to do in Sheffield this season, so you can have enjoy every bit of fall before the holidays are upon us!

1. Take a Stroll Through Chatsworth Garden

While Chatsworth Garden is always beautiful, it’s spectacular this time of year. With a working farm, shops, afternoon tea, and events (like a Masquerade Ball and Christmas markets), there’s always fun waiting.

2. Stop by Cocoa for a Decadent Hot Chocolate

As the days get chillier (and coursework more stressful), there’s nothing better than curling up with a mug of cocoa. Drop into the majestic Cocoa Wonderland café, right down the road from LIV Student Sheffield on Ecclesall Road. What better way to study than with a steaming cup of chocolate by your side? Bring home their handmade chocolates and sweets to keep the cosy vibe going.

3. Browse Sheffield’s Charity Shops for Fashionable Finds

Oversized, vintage sweaters. Classic boots. Statement jackets. There’s no doubt; fall fashion is the best. Sheffield’s many charity shops are the perfect way to look smart without over-spending. And helping worthy causes while not contributing to wasteful mass production? Perfection!

Bonus: You know you’ll need outfits for all the upcoming fall and winter holidays, parties, and events. Plan ahead and grab the best finds before they’re all sold out! #ShoppingHacks

4. See a Show at the Theatre Deli

Whether you’re craving modern theatre, sharp-witted comedy, or a classic film, Theatre Deli has something on the menu. This season, they’re showcasing a wide variety of pieces. Choices range from “Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula The Sea Witch” to “The True Historie of Mr William Shakespeare.” They even have screenings of Christmas classics to wind down the autumn season.

5. Get Up Close with Wildlife at Mayfield Alpacas Animal Park

If classwork has been stressing you out, there’s no better way to unwind than with adorable animals. Mayfield Alpacas Animal Park has (of course) alpacas, but that’s not all. There are meerkats, exotic birds, farm animals, wallabies, reindeer, and more. You can even sponsor one of the animals, allowing you to help support their mission of animal welfare.

6. Spend a Rainy Day Embracing the History of Sheffield at the Weston Park Museum

Sheffield gets our fair share of rainy autumn days. That’s no reason to miss a fun day out! Weston Park Museum, the largest museum in the city, is one of the most fun things to do in Sheffield. It houses seven galleries full of art and history. This season, you can see exhibits focusing on the LGBTQ+ history of Sheffield. Or check out poetry and poems exploring our area’s rich past and celebrating the lives of our residents. PLUS! The museum is free to enter and open seven days a week—even on Bank Holidays! So you’ll never be at a loss for something to do.

7. Enjoy a Picnic in the Park under the Autumn Leaves

Who says that summer months are the only time of year you can have a picnic? We recommend tea, a thermos of soup, and warm cookies on a soft blanket while enjoying the fall foliage. Thanks to Sheffield’s 80 public parks, you can always find a lovely spot to set up. And when you have a mountain of homework to do? It feels way less stressful when done on a picnic blanket in the autumn sun—trust us. ?

8. Go on the Hunt for your New Favourite Artist in Sheffield’s Galleries

The Steele City is bursting with artistic energy; an afternoon spent exploring its many galleries, and art spaces is time well spent. Get inspired, reinvigorated, and ready to tackle your studies with a new perspective. One great option is Site Gallery. This contemporary art space features a variety of author performances, workshops, and reading groups this autumn.

9. Unleash your Inner Foodie at Moor Market

Located right in the heart of the city centre, Moor Market is a bustling, permanent market. It offers enough vendors to keep you exploring for hours. (And enough tasty dishes, like pork pies, craft beer, and hot coffee, to keep your stomach full for days!) The prices are also happily reasonable—a must for that uni budget! So you can stock up on healthy groceries and brain food to keep you fueled for study sessions to come!

10. Connect with nature in the Peak District National Park

Take full advantage of the autumn weather, disconnect from your homework and technology, and let yourself explore the natural wonder of Peak District National Park. Whether you’re looking to hike, cycle, or enjoy a leisurely walk taking in autumn colours, this is the perfect place. Let go of your stresses and reconnect with nature—and yourself.
